Thai study project provides more insights into tilapia welfare

August, 2023

In a recent study conducted in Thailand, FAI helped to examine the welfare indicators at eight small-scale, semi-intensive and intensive tilapia farms.

The focus of the study was on four crucial welfare categories: health, environment, behaviour, and nutrition. Clear links emerged between these four categories, offering insights into critical welfare points in fish farming.

For example, behavioural assessments highlighted shortcomings during the catching process, indicating areas for improvement in welfare practices, and nutritional assessments also showed variations in feed conversion rates.

By using these insights, the hope is to encourage more responsible tilapia farming practices in the future and help farmers to produce healthier fish while also achieving better profits, and higher-quality products for consumers.
