International Fisheries Symposium addresses animal welfare in aquaculture

Bangkok December, 2023

FAI attended the 11th International Fisheries Symposium in Bangkok, where delegates from across Asia discussed the future of fish and shrimp farming.

The symposium covered many ongoing industry matters from fish health to equitable treatment for those working in the seafood sector. Despite being a relatively new concept in Asia, part of the symposium was also dedicated to the increasingly important issue of animal welfare in aquaculture.

“The interest expressed by many attendees reflected a collective eagerness to learn more about this important subject,” explained Marius Nicolini, aquaculture project manager at FAI. “Focusing on welfare practices and guiding farmers to view this aspect of their work differently can only be positive for the Asian aquaculture industry.”

During the symposium FAI also announced a strategic partnership with Can Tho University, focused on enhancing shrimp welfare in Vietnam.
